About

Jonathan Parker is a saxophonist, composer, and educator who recently brought his dynamic musicianship to the Bay Area following a decade-long career in the New York City jazz scene. From the clubs of Brooklyn to international stages in China, Parker has earned a reputation for what CapitalBop calls “ambitious but ultimately lovable” music—a sound that balances contemporary edge with a deep respect for the jazz tradition.

A prolific bandleader, Parker’s work is anchored by two critically acclaimed albums: the 2021 quintet release The Remainder and the 2015 octet debut Interloper. His writing has been hailed by All About Jazz as “chock-full of tight ensemble work and compelling solo statements,” while Bebop Spoken Here described his alto saxophone playing as “fiery and yet cool… unleashing breathtaking wizardry.”

Beyond his own projects, Jonathan is a versatile collaborator and arranger. He has contributed horn orchestrations to indie-rock records like The North Country’s In Defense of Cosmic Altruism and tours regularly with the Atlanta-based Theodicy Jazz Collective and the D.C.-based calypso ensemble the Harry Bells.

Parallel to his performance career, Jonathan is a seasoned educator who spent years navigating the high-energy, fast-paced environment of the New York City public school system. As a veteran middle school music teacher, he developed a reputation for the ingenuity and quick-thinking required to inspire young musicians in a complex urban setting. Now a resident of Northern California, he brings that same adaptability and creative pedagogical approach to Bay Area public schools, dedicated to fostering the next generation of creative voices.
